5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Sustainable 2023

We’ve all been caught in the cycle of forgetting about New Year’s resolutions soon after making them. This year, we’re creating goals based on sustainable values that are much more exciting (and rewarding) to keep up with 💚. Planet-friendly New Year’s resolutions can help you flex your creativity, gain knowledge, and help reduce emissions and clothing waste. Kick off the New Year with a closet clear-out, and use the sustainable resolutions below as a starting point to extend the life cycle of your closet.

Hold a Clothing Swap with your Community 👯‍♀️

Clothing swaps are the perfect opportunity to connect with your community and add some cute new pieces to your wardrobe. Swaps can range from a small group of friends having a home-cooked meal together and trading clothes from their closets, to a large event that helps out those in need of warm clothes for the winter. You can even make a pact with your fam to bring extra clothes to family parties to trade (or hand down to younger ones). No matter the size or intention of your swap, have some fun with it – flex your design skills by creating an event flyer for social media, create a playlist, and set up some food and drinks ♥️.

Clear out your Closet to Sell Second-Hand 👗

The best part of selling second-hand is knowing for sure that a piece you no longer want is going into the hands of someone who wants or needs it – and can easily pass it on in the future. One of the best ways to resell consistently is by doing recurring closet cleanouts. This gives you the chance to slow down and decide which items you’d like to let go of or add to your wardrobe (plus it keeps your space less cluttered✨). As a seller, you can try challenging yourself to use sustainable shipping practices, like reusing packaging you already have or adding thank you notes for buyers on recycled paper ♻️.

Mend your Clothes 🪡

The longer you have a piece of clothing, the more wear and tear it may get, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to toss or donate it! There are so many ways to mend your clothes, from getting them fixed at a tailor to learning how to sew so you can fix holes and tears yourself! To avoid having to do too much damage control, take a little extra time to give your clothes some TLC from the time you first get them. One of the easiest ways to start doing this is to learn how to read clothing care labels (because who can really tell what those random shapes and symbols actually mean?) Once your clothing can’t take any more washes, consider upcycling it into something like a purse or reusing the fabric for cleaning (or even a fabric art project ).

Upcycle your Old Threads 🎨

Upcycling – which is basically giving unused materials new life/value – is the perfect way to let your creativity shine. One quick scroll through upcycling TikTok will start you off with tons of inspiration, and you’ll never look at the old fabrics, charms, and unworn clothes you have laying around the house the same! A lot of upcycled items with parts from brands like LV and Chanel can be found on Curtsy, but you don’t have to have a luxury element in the upcycled pieces you create. By upcycling, you can keep finished products from ending up as waste, and add your own twist for a whole new design 🪡💛.

Try out Sustainable Brands ♻️

To help keep your sustainable habits going past New Years, keep yourself up to date on sustainability in the fashion world. On top of doing your own research, it also helps to read articles and purchase clothing (secondhand is even better, of course) from sustainable brands like Patagonia and Levis. The people behind these brands are dedicating endless hours towards being industry leaders in sustainability. On their websites, some brands like Patagonia have environmental activism sections about their values, opportunities to get involved in environmental groups, and inspirational stories from activists around the world 🌎.

From the closet of a friend, to a unique upcycled accessory, to the Curtsy feed, there’s always more life to give to your clothes ✨

How to Save the Planet 🌎 (and some $$$) This Fall

ICYMI…It’s 🍂Fall Y’all🍂 and don’t we love it! We fall hard for PSL, Fall scents and gourd-geous fashion at Curtsy. We know you have a long list of 🍁 faves, too. And, just because we want it all for Fall, doesn’t mean we can’t still show our love for the planet 🌎. Scroll along to see how you can live your best life, but make it eco-friendly this szn.

  1. Thrift Your 🎃 Halloween Fits 🎃

We love showing off our creative and drop-dead gorgeous style during Halloween. But, let’s creep it real 👻, we wear the costume to a few parties and then next year we want to be something completely different. That makes costumes the perfect thing to thrift. Feeling spooked because you don’t have a costume yet? Shop our Curtsy Curated Halloween list that we’re always adding Spooky Selections to 🎃 👻💀!

  1. ♻️Reduce and Reuse♻️ at Starbies: Show the Planet Some TLC When You PSL ☕️

Fall has you going to Starbucks on the daily. No judgement here, we love Starbies a latte too! What’s even sweeter? Getting buzzed on pumpkin spice and everything nice, but make it sustainable! Cancel single-use cups by popping inside your favorite Starbucks and filling up your best reusable mug with your Fall drink of choice ☕️ (our new favorite: apple crisp macchiato). Plus, you get a tiny discount for being so thoughtful. Win-win!

  1. Get Fresh with Cozy 🍂 Fall Trends 🍂

The Fall forecast is a 100% chance of cozy. And when you snuggle up to Fall trends you give off major Hot Girl Fall vibes by literally saving the heat 🔥. Cozy up your closet with trending cardigans and sweaters on Curtsy. You’ll feel so cool and will stay warmer this szn in your hot looks.

  1. Major Closet Cleanout 🧺

Bring in fresh Fall vibes with a style refresh. Sell last year’s wardrobe on Curtsy and then get some new Fall fits. Have items you can’t sell? We love organizations like The Bra Recyclers and Project Beauty Share where you can donate your pre-loved goods and do a ton of good 💚💚💚!

  1. Tote Up on Your Trader Joe’s Haul 🛒

Ready for another Fall Trader Joe’s haul!? Don’t forget your reusable tote tho! Need a tote refresh? We got you. Stock up on reusable totes on Curtsy.

  1. 🧖‍♀️Spa Smart 🧖‍♀️

Did you know plastic loofahs can be a little sus? They’re known to shed plastic microfibers down the drain. 😫 Plus, they end up wasting away in landfills. Go natural 🌿🌿! It’s better for your skin and the environment. This szn make sure to treat yo self, because you deserve it. But, let’s also treat the planet cause she’s a queen!

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting: I love thrifting and shopping second hand because it’s better for the environment and cheaper as well! Additionally, with things like denim more wear is good because they’re more comfortable!
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
My favorite sustainability tip is to find clothing brands that align with your own values and goals (such as sustainable brands etc). I also like to reuse packaging like jars!

Madison Crain

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting:
I love shopping with curtsy and thrift stores in general because not only are the clothes cheaper, it is helping the environment! Not to mention, it is super easy to post the clothes you don’t want anymore on curtsy!
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
One of my sustainability tips is to try to use reusable bags when going to the store, wether that be the grocery store or shopping out and about! You can also use metal straws instead of plastic straws so you aren’t wasting any plastic, you can even buy the reusable Starbucks cups!

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting: I love thrifting because I get to rehome my clothes to someone who will appreciate them more than me.
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
If I have one tip on staying sustainable its that anything that may seem old to you can be new to someone else!

🪴 Why I Love Thrifting:
I’ve recently found a love for fashion- especially second hand. Thrifting/second hand shopping is such a great way to avoid buying fast fashion, which is unfortunately mistreating us, as well as our environment. Older pieces that I find to be my style are marked down significantly, so it’s easy to have a wardrobe full of what I WANT to wear! Thrifting is one of my favorite activities to do with my friends. Trying out new styles without breaking the bank is truly a fun and rewarding experience!
♻️ Sustainability Tip:
My favorite sustainability tip is to purchase one or two reusable water bottles. I have two bottles that I switch between, and they’re great! Americans throw away 35 billion empty water bottles a year- and only 12% are recycled. Having a reusable bottle eliminates the waste, and I’ve also found that I’m excited to use it!

Meet our Curtsy Stylists: Rachel, Ally, Grace, & Aaliyah
Meet our Curtsy Stylists: Rachel, Ally, Grace, & Aaliyah

Need some inspo on how to help reduce your carbon footprint and environmental impact? Read on!

  1. Shop & sell responsibly
    • 🛍️ Buy from:
      • Curtsy, duh — but really, the best way to keep up with fashion trends sustainably is to buy secondhand.
      • Facebook Marketplace — there are some GREAT finds out there for furniture. West Elm, Pottery Barn, vintage. Fun fact: our office furniture is all thrifted off of FB Marketplace thanks to our very own Clags!
      • Remake — a Curtsy partner, Remake has a brand directory where they rate brands you already know & love based on factors including: Human Rights, Climate, Water, and Waste. Discover new brands on there & shop them on Curtsy
    • ♻️ Give items a second, third, fourth, etc. life
      • Don’t waste any of your precious time in person at the thrift store. And do you really know where items you donate end up in? The majority end up in landfills. Instead, sell your items on a resale platform like Curtsy so you know they’re not going to end up in a landfill after you’re done with them.
  2. Rethink your beauty & kitchen tools
    • 💋 Beauty — Replace your disposable cotton swabs & pads with something reusable! I personally used to use those disposable make up wipes everyday but have since replaced them with reusable pads & a MakeUp Eraser
    • 🧋 Eat/drink — Try replacing your sandwich bags & saran wrap with beeswax wraps & silicone sandwich bags.Do you still drink your coffee & tea out of paper cups? Do you still buy plastic water bottles? Try reusable tumblers and mugs like these instead. There are SO many options out there.
  3. Watch these documentaries
    • 👗 The True Cost — an eyeopening deep dive into the fast fashion industry
    • 🌊 Seaspiracy — how our diets affect our ocean friends
  4. 🌎 David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet — our impact on nature

  5. Commute consciously — now there are plenty of ways to get around: carpool with friends, bike, scooter/moped, take public transportation, or get some fresh air and walk. 🚲🛴🛵

3 Ways to Make Your Closet More Green 💚

The fashion industry is one of the most profitable industries in the world because it crosses global lines. 🌎 People use fashion to express themselves and to relate to different trends, pop culture references and friend groups so of course it produces a lot of waste!

The average person throws away 70 pounds of clothing per year which equals 13 million tons of waste just in the US! The rise of social media, influencer culture and overconsumption has made way for new trends to come and go overnight. People’s closets are constantly growing and adding the newest piece to keep up with the times. The rise in clothing purchases has made the fashion industry a huge source of waste globally so we wanted to share our top 3 ways to make your closet more green!

♻️ Thrifting

Thrifting is something that has always been done of course, but over the last few years, it has made its way to mainstream fashion in ways that no one would have expected! As more people become aware of the wasteful practices of the fashion industry, many teens and young adults have been starting to go thrift shopping to find ways to reduce clothing purchases.

In New York City alone, 400 million pounds of thrifted clothing were tossed out in 2018 – now imagine that worldwide! There are so many perfectly, unused and gently used clothing items to be found by going thrifting so why not make a day of it with your friends! Trends always repeat themselves so you can always find some hidden gems at the thrift shops!

👗 Renting

We all love fashion but it is not possible for most people to purchase everything under the sun because it isn’t sustainable and we don’t have endless amounts of cash to get it all! Renting has been an amazing way to get some of the best brands and empty out your closet because you return the pieces when finished with them!

At places like Rent the Runway and Nuuly, you can rent designer pieces every month for under $100 and return them when you are finished! No need to purchase tons of clothes for special events, date nights or casual weekends when you can rent something and give it a long life by passing it on to someone else! And did you know that Curtsy started off as a renting app?

🛍 Shopping Second Hand on Curtsy

Of course we couldn’t talk about a green closet without mentioning secondhand shopping! Everything has become digital and so of course shopping has too. On Curtsy, you can find some of your favorite brands – with the tags still on!!! – at such a discounted price. There are weekly sales, you can get up to 70% off on some items, and you have a whole community on Curtsy where thrifting is made easy. The experience is super user friendly and the app is one big closet share! Happy Earth Month Curtsy gals! 🌎
